Yuvati Bhava (also Kalatra Bhava) · 7th House
The mirror — marriage, partnerships, the open public, and the other through whom we know ourselves.
Significations
The Yuvati Bhava governs marriage, the spouse (kalatra), business partnerships, the open public (in contrast to enemies in the 6th), foreign residence, and trade. It is a kendra — a powerful angle — and also a maraka, meaning that its lord during its dasha can deliver life-direction moments through partnership, contract, or marriage. Shukra is the natural karaka for marriage; Guru is the karaka of the husband for a woman, and Shukra is the karaka of the wife for a man. The 7th is opposite the Lagna, and so represents the principle that we come to know ourselves through encounter with the other.
When Well Placed
A strong 7th — well-placed 7th lord, unafflicted Shukra and Guru, benefics aspecting the 7th — produces healthy marriage, lasting partnerships, fair public dealings, and capacity for sustained trade or business. The spouse arrives at the right time, is of compatible nature, and supports the native's life arc. Public-facing work flourishes. The native is able to hold the inevitable disagreements of partnership without rupture. Strong 7th-house signatures show in lawyers, diplomats, public counselors, and successful entrepreneurs.
When Afflicted
Affliction patterns are numerous and important: Rahu or Ketu in the 7th; Mangal in the 7th producing kuja dosha (especially harsh in classical readings, requiring careful examination); the 7th lord in dusthanas; afflicted Shukra. Results include delayed marriage, marriage to an unsuitable partner, multiple marriages, divorce, difficulties with business partnerships, and a tendency toward conflict in any public-facing role. Phaladeepika gives extensive treatment to the 7th's afflictions because they affect not only marriage but reputation in the open public.
Planetary Placements
Surya in the 7th can damage marriage by overpowering the partner; the native may also have a famous spouse or work in government. Chandra in the 7th makes the native dependent on partnership for emotional health. Mangal in the 7th is the classical kuja dosha placement — its severity depends on aspects and the sign occupied. Budha in the 7th is good for business partnerships and a youthful spouse. Guru in the 7th is excellent — it grants a wise, generous spouse and successful partnerships. Shukra in the 7th can damage marriage by drawing in extramarital interest, but in dignity grants a beautiful spouse. Shani in the 7th delays marriage but produces a steady, mature partner. Rahu in the 7th often produces foreign spouse or unconventional marriage.
Remedial Guidance
Strengthen Shukra and Guru. For unmarried natives seeking marriage, Friday observances, recitation of Lakshmi or Lalita stotras, dana of white flowers and curd. For partnership health, regular shared rituals between partners — meals, walks, prayers — strengthen the 7th materially. Kuja dosha matching during marriage selection is still classically prescribed and worth taking seriously.
