Ari Bhava (also Roga / Shatru) · 6th House
The battleground — enemies, illness, debt, and daily work that, when accepted, becomes mastery.
Significations
The Ari Bhava is a dusthana — a difficult house — but also an upachaya, meaning it strengthens with effort and time. It governs enemies, debts, diseases, daily service-work (the work of an employee rather than a master), maternal uncles, digestion, the immune system, and accidents. The natural karaka is Mangal and to some extent Shani — both planets of effort and consequence. Phaladeepika regards a strong 6th as a sign of victory over difficulty: enemies defeated, debts cleared, illness overcome. A weak 6th is the chronic experience of being slightly under attack from all directions at once.
When Well Placed
Counterintuitively, malefics in the 6th are good — Mangal, Shani, and even Rahu in the 6th create what is sometimes called Vipareeta Raja Yoga when the 6th lord is also in a dusthana. Such a placement turns enemies into stepping stones, debts into discipline, and chronic challenges into mastery. The native develops unusual resilience and the capacity to handle situations that would unseat others. Doctors, lawyers, soldiers, debt managers, and detectives often show strong 6th-house signatures.
When Afflicted
Affliction shows when the 6th lord is in a kendra or trikona without benefic association, especially in conjunction with Lagna lord, 4th lord, or 9th lord. Such combinations bring chronic illness, ongoing enemy patterns, recurrent debt, and difficulties with maternal relatives. Benefics in the 6th can actually weaken benefic significations: Guru in the 6th may reduce wisdom's external recognition; Shukra in the 6th can damage marriage through workplace entanglements. Phaladeepika is firm that the 6th must be handled with strategy rather than denial.
Planetary Placements
Surya in the 6th defeats enemies and grants government service positions. Chandra in the 6th can produce digestive sensitivity and emotional reactivity to stress. Mangal in the 6th is excellent — it grants victory over enemies, success in litigation, and surgical capacity. Budha in the 6th is good for accountants, doctors, and analysts, though it can damage speech. Guru in the 6th is mixed — wisdom in handling challenges but reduced material expansion. Shukra in the 6th can damage marriage through workplace relationships. Shani in the 6th is excellent — chronic problems become bearable and ultimately solved through patience.
Remedial Guidance
Strengthen the 6th lord without strengthening enemies' indicators. Daily disciplined work — even drudgery — is itself a remedy for this house. Care for digestion through sattvic eating. Service to those in difficulty (the sick, the indebted) clears 6th-house karma. Hanuman worship — Mangal's higher form — is the classical remedy for enemies and chronic obstacles. Tuesday and Saturday observances both apply.
