Labha Bhava · 11th House
The gains — income, fulfilled wishes, elder siblings, and the network through which fortune flows.
Significations
The Labha Bhava governs income (as distinct from saved wealth in the 2nd), the fulfillment of desires, elder siblings, friends and social network, mentors, and the broader community in which the native participates. It is an upachaya — a house that grows with effort and time, and benefits from the presence of malefics. Guru is the natural karaka for gains; Shani naturally rules the sign on the 11th in the natural chart. The 11th is generally considered the strongest of the kama houses and one of the more universally beneficial houses, regardless of which planet sits in it.
When Well Placed
Strength shows when the 11th lord is placed in a kendra or trikona, especially in own sign or exalted; benefics in the 11th; the 11th lord forming yogas with the 2nd lord or the lord of any kendra. Malefics in the 11th — Mangal, Shani, even Rahu — are good rather than damaging, because the upachaya nature processes their challenges into outcomes. The native has good income across the working life, sees desires fulfilled (with the karmic price of the desires themselves), has elder siblings who help rather than hinder, and accumulates a network of supportive friends.
When Afflicted
Affliction patterns are subtler than for other houses. The 11th lord placed in 6, 8, or 12; Ketu in the 11th (sometimes problematic for elder siblings); benefics weakened in the 11th by combustion. Results include difficulty translating effort into income, delayed or lost gains, problems with elder siblings, and a social network that draws on rather than contributes to the native. Phaladeepika treats the 11th gently because, as he notes, gains are gains — even partial gains feed life.
Planetary Placements
Surya in the 11th brings gains through government or authority and elder-sibling relationships with mixed dynamics. Chandra in the 11th is excellent — it grants emotional connection to a wide network and steady income. Mangal in the 11th is excellent — gains through effort, courage in financial matters, athletic elder siblings. Budha in the 11th grants gains through writing, trade, and communication. Guru in the 11th is one of the best placements for income and fulfilled desires. Shukra in the 11th grants gains through luxury, beauty, partnership, or art. Shani in the 11th is excellent — slow but very large and durable gains over the decades. Rahu in the 11th is also classically excellent — sudden gains, foreign income, technology-mediated wealth.
Remedial Guidance
Strengthen the 11th lord. Honor elder siblings and mentors actively, since the 11th is the house of those who came before. Saturday observances, recitation of Shani Stotra and Hanuman Chalisa, dana of black sesame on Saturdays. Maintain the calves and ankles through movement. Cultivate friendships that uplift; release relationships that drain. The 11th rewards being a good friend more reliably than it rewards being merely a clever earner.
