Significations

The Karma Bhava is the zenith of the chart — the highest point, the moment the Sun is overhead, the place of greatest visibility. It governs career, livelihood (vritti), social status, public reputation, government and authority figures, the knees, and the action by which the native is recognized in the world. Surya, Budha, Guru, and Shani are all considered karakas of the 10th in different aspects: Surya for authority and recognition, Budha for skill, Guru for advisory roles, Shani for sustained labor. The 10th is one of the four kendras and one of the most powerful houses in the entire chart.

When Well Placed

Strength comes from the 10th lord in own sign or exalted, in a kendra or trikona, unafflicted; a strong Surya; benefics aspecting the 10th; the 10th lord forming yogas with the lord of the 1st, 5th, or 9th. Such a native rises in their chosen field, becomes recognized for their work, gains positions of authority, and contributes meaningfully to the social order. Career feels like dharma rather than burden. Strong 10th-house signatures show in CEOs, judges, senior physicians, ministers, generals, and any vocation where public weight is held.

When Afflicted

Common afflictions: 10th lord in dusthanas; malefics damaging the 10th from the 3rd, 7th, or 12th; an afflicted Surya; the 10th lord retrograde and weak. Results include career instability, repeated job changes without progression, conflict with authority figures, damage to reputation, and difficulty finding work that matches the native's inner capacity. Phaladeepika notes that an afflicted 10th can also damage relationship with father, since both share Surya as karaka. Sade Sati transits often produce profound career challenges when the 10th is involved.

Planetary Placements

Surya in the 10th in dignity is one of the greatest possible placements — Digbala for Surya, producing high authority and visibility. Chandra in the 10th in dignity also grants public favor and a mother who contributes to the native's career. Mangal in the 10th in dignity is excellent for executive, military, and surgical careers. Budha in the 10th grants intellectual and commercial success. Guru in the 10th in dignity grants advisory roles and high reputation. Shukra in the 10th can produce careers in art, design, beauty, or relationship-mediated work. Shani in the 10th in dignity grants slow but very durable career success — government, judiciary, large institutions. Rahu in the 10th often produces unconventional or technology-related careers and sudden recognition.

Remedial Guidance

Strengthen Surya through Sunday observances, sun salutations at dawn, recitation of the Aditya Hridayam, and dana of wheat or copper on Sundays. Honor authority figures even when one disagrees. Maintain the knees through movement and warmth. Take work seriously without making it the whole of identity. The 10th rewards skill plus integrity over either skill or ambition alone.
