Dhana Bhava · 2nd House
What we have gathered around us — wealth, family, speech, and the taste of what we consume.
Significations
The Dhana Bhava governs accumulated wealth — savings, ornaments, fixed assets — as distinct from the income described by the 11th. It also rules family of origin (kutumba), speech (vāk), the food one eats, the right eye, and the immediate sense of being supported or unsupported by what one has. Guru is the natural karaka for wealth, and his strength matters greatly here. The 2nd is also a maraka bhava — a house that, when activated by a malefic lord during its dasha, can deliver significant life-direction moments because it governs sustenance. Phaladeepika reads the 2nd as the measure of whether one's labor returns to oneself or scatters.
When Well Placed
Strength shows when the 2nd lord is well placed in a kendra or trikona, unafflicted, and ideally in friend's house or its own. Benefics in the 2nd, especially Guru or a waxing Chandra, grant easy speech, gentle face, generous family, and steady accumulation. Dhana yogas form when the 2nd lord and the 11th lord exchange or aspect each other strongly, or when 2nd and 5th lords combine. A strong 2nd produces savings that grow without anxiety, food that nourishes, and a voice others want to listen to.
When Afflicted
Common afflictions: 2nd lord in dusthanas (6, 8, 12); malefics in the 2nd without aspect from benefics; Rahu or Ketu in the 2nd; papakartari yoga around the 2nd. Results include family discord, harsh or untruthful speech, financial irregularity, eye trouble, and difficulty with food (eating disorders, dental issues, throat problems). Maraka effects can be significant during the dasha of an afflicted 2nd lord. Phaladeepika warns that 2nd-house affliction damages reputation through the mouth as much as through the purse.
Planetary Placements
Surya in the 2nd can produce a commanding voice and government wealth but may cause friction in family, especially with father. Chandra here makes the native fond of food and family, attractive of face. Mangal in the 2nd often produces sharp or harsh speech and can damage family relations. Budha in the 2nd is excellent for speech, writing, and trade. Guru in the 2nd is a great wealth indicator and a refined speaker. Shukra in the 2nd grants sweet speech, beauty, and luxury. Shani in the 2nd delays family wealth but produces sustained, disciplined accumulation later. Rahu in the 2nd can produce sudden wealth and equally sudden family difficulties.
Remedial Guidance
Strengthen the 2nd lord. Practice speech discipline — refrain from harsh, untruthful, and excessive speech, since speech and the 2nd are tightly bound. Daily recitation of the Vishnu Sahasranama or Lakshmi Stotra. Dana of food on Thursdays. Care for the teeth and throat. Eating in a settled posture, blessing food before consuming it, and sharing meals with family strengthen the bhava materially.
