Significations

The Bandhu Bhava governs mother (matru), home, immovable property, vehicles, land, peace of mind (sukha), the chest, the heart, and the unconscious emotional foundation of life. Chandra is the natural karaka, since the mother and emotional security are the Moon's domain. The 4th is a kendra and one of the most psychologically important houses: it represents what the native carries inside them as ground, the inner home from which all outer effort proceeds. Parashara emphasizes that the 4th is the seat of happiness itself — sukha-sthana — and when damaged, even outer success cannot dispel inner restlessness.

When Well Placed

The 4th lord well-placed in a kendra or trikona, with benefic aspects and the natural karaka Chandra strong, produces a deeply settled person. The childhood home was nurturing or at least dependable; the native has or will have property; vehicles arrive without struggle; the mother was or remains a positive presence; and the chest carries no chronic tightness. A waxing Moon in the 4th is a classical great-yoga, often producing both wealth and emotional steadiness. Education and learning of the heart-felt kind also belong to this house.

When Afflicted

Afflictions to the 4th — malefics tenanting it (especially Rahu, Ketu, Shani), 4th lord in dusthanas, an afflicted Moon — produce loss of mother, separation from homeland, chronic restlessness even amid comfort, anxiety in the chest, and difficulty owning a stable home. Phaladeepika notes the 4th's affliction also damages education, since real learning requires inner ground. Sade Sati transits affecting the 4th from the Moon are especially destabilizing. The native may build many homes and feel at home in none.

Planetary Placements

Surya in the 4th can produce a powerful career-driven personality but typically distances the native from mother and home. Chandra in the 4th is excellent, especially waxing — emotional generosity, beautiful home, devoted mother. Mangal in the 4th is more difficult — it can produce domestic conflict, but also entrepreneurial drive in real estate. Budha in the 4th grants a refined home environment and gifted communication around domestic life. Guru in the 4th is a great blessing — wisdom from the mother, large home, peaceful interior. Shukra in the 4th brings luxury, vehicles, and aesthetic homes. Shani in the 4th delays home and burdens early life with heaviness around mother, but produces deep wisdom later. Rahu in the 4th often produces movement abroad, foreign home, and chronic inner unrest.

Remedial Guidance

Strengthen Chandra and the 4th lord. Honor mother in all forms — the literal mother, mother-figures, the earth, and the home. Monday observances, recitation of Devi mantras (Lalita Sahasranama, Durga Saptashati), white-clothed seva, and dana of milk, rice, and white flowers. Care for the chest through breathwork. Even small daily acts that beautify the home — fresh flowers, clean thresholds — strengthen the bhava materially.
